First day in the Campus week

It was really nice meeting the three guys who is participating in this course. I was impressed by their ideas about what course they were thinking about creating themselves. I think we had some good discussions and that we started a good process on what is going to be their final work.

Now the weather is too good to sit inside anylonger so I think we should end the work today and start to look at the surroundings of Bergen.

TO MORROW

....the campus week with our e-pedagogy students will start! I'm excited about meeting our new participants and do hope we will have a good time together even though we will be a very small group. Starting the course on a Saturday and working on Sunday is not ideal, but still a good solution since several people could not stay the whole next week. So we will work and then do some sightseeing in the afternoon. I hope the weather will be good as it is to day.

Making screen lectures

WHat is a screen lecture???
Well this was the subject today. XAvier managed to have an interactive lecture with our partners and different and good ideas came up about what is a good screen lecture.
It has many of the same features as an ordinary lecture. It should be engaging, interesting, trigger the students interests and have a portion of humor.
One thing i the ideal and another thing is to manage to do this in front of a camera in a language which is not your mother tongue. - It is not easy.
We did try all of us, and some good examples came up. Rina and I had some fun in front of the camera I think. It was a too long recording, but I think it was a good try. We was speaking more freely about our own city and interviewing each other in a way. Too short time however to edit and to put in the pictures that could have made the presentation better.
I had to leave the group 16:30 to join Bieke for her recording of AI. I think she did a good job. But everytime we experience that it is important to have a good manuscript, and to be well prepared by knowing the text as best as you can to bring in the feelings and emotions in the speach.

Well non of us is professional television persons so we all have to learn the skiills to come out of the screen.

It was a long days work. We continued till 19:00 with the recording.
To morrow we will be focusing on the trigger production.

1 day in the workshop

Well at the moment I am saticfied with the first day. I'm tired after a long days work and a very good meel at Neptun. It was in a way a little bit scary when Benjamin started to go through the menue with us, and I think that people had the same thought as me, will we manage this together?
BUT WE DID!! And the workpackage 8 in SW-VirCAmp - collaboration and companionship went very well. It was a demanding workpackage done in 2 hours with three main deliverables: starter, main course and dessert.

Well this was the evening. I think the day also went well. I'm curious to see how many of us that manage to write their blog to night, because there was no time for that in the end of the working day.
To morrow we will start with a report and reflection of yesterday.
I think it has been nice meeting the new participants, and I hope they will feel good together with the rest of the gang that have met and worked together for a while.

Evaluation of the course

I'm a lazy blogger, and I don't think I will be the type of person that use this tool too often. A pitty realy, because I do believe in writing to sort out ideas and to reflect on what has been done.
It's a paradox that I stress reflection as important for learning with my students, but do not manage to do this as often as I should myself. Well life and doctrine does not always come together.

Now I've had 4 weeks of holiday and think it's time to do some reflections on how the e-pedagogy course has been going.

It seems to be a long time since the students were in Bergen on the Campus week. I think the weekend we had at Skjerjehamn was important for making a good group. Even though Jochen was not partisipating in that seminar, I think he very quickly came into the group in a good way when we started the course Monday the 5 May. Even though the group of students (it's strange to call this group students since they are teachers and colleagues from different countries) seemed to learn a lot from this first week in Bergen. We were lucky with the weather and Bergen really showed herself from the best side (even the guests complained that they did not have any rain!).
Still I think many things could be changed and has to be changed before next time. First of all I think that we wanted too much. It's always a problem when constructing the e-learning courses to calculate how much work and time everything takes. During the Campus week - from my point of view - we need to improve the lectures we presented. It's difficult to know how to prepare good lectures, when you do not know the knowledge base of your students. This time we experienced difference in the knowledge about basic pedagogical theories which we had taken for granted that people knew. To improve the course we should make a screen lecture on the pedagogical theory we are using and let students see this during the first two weeks before the Campus starts.
To have in mind that teachers like to speak themselves is also important, and an improvement for the Campus week will be to work more process oriented and grouporiented with tasks. It is important to activate and use the knowledge and experience that is in the student group.
The group task where we used different triggers seemed to work well and made a good change in the programme. It is important next time to give more time for reflection and feedback after the group work - and to link the task to theoretical aspects and their own construction of e-learning courses. The task were the students were asked to give a transparent feedback to papers written by other students were also a very good exercise and showed that this is a good way to start discussions about how to give feedback and what is criteria for good feedback. Also when we worked on this task we might have used more time when summing up the experience.

The literature presented for the course/curriculum can be improved, and some good ideas from the students - especially Vivienne should be considered to take into the course next time.

From the report students gave after the week in Bergen, most of them returned to a very busy periode with work at their institution and many had difficulties with keeping up witht he course schedule in they way they had intended to do. By prolonging the course periode till 15 August we hope all the students will manage to fulfil their plan.

This is not an easy course. It is however a course which is based on the idea of giving meaningful learning - where the students can learn by developing their own e-learning module which should be used for students later.
I'm very curious to see how the students evaluate this course in the end.
Yesterday I started to construct the survey for an end evaluation. It will be interesting to see the results of this and also to see the construction of the e-learning courses they develop. There is a lot of interesting subjects related to different aspects of social work. I hope that we in future can see these courses part of the package of optional e-learning courses that can be offered as part of the VIRCLASS studies.

When constructing this e-ped course we wanted to give students knowledge and skills in using different tools for e-learning. Both being able to use standard LMS, but also to know how to use blog and the different Google tools. It will be interesting to see how the students will evaluate this in the end. As teacher in this course I think that this sometimes has resulted in confusion - especially how and where to find the students tasks (this can be improved with better instructions). I find the reflections students have made in their blog very interesting to read and I think that the way we "forced" them to reflect during the Campus week was a good thing. However not all students have managed to continue to use the blog for reflection as often as expected later. I'm impressed though about the creativity many of them shows and how they use Youtube vidoes in their presentations.

Working on the course again

To day I have been preparing the weekly programmes. I have been looking for some literature about competence based curriculum planning and from my search in Google I came over an article and a ppt made by my colleague and friend Jan Agten at the KHKempen in Belgium. I think I will present this in the course. I have also been thinking that may be Jan could come to Bergen and make a short screen lecture about this?? I also found an article about Gender and Competence-based training
http://www.ilo.org/public/english/region/ampro/cinterfor/publ/gen_cbt/index.htm.
This I have to look into more, it seems interesting.

I think that making good competence based curriculum plans are difficult. I notice when I look into the plan for this course that many things might have been different. I hope my students in the course will comment on this and help to improve the course. Meanwhile it has to be like it is for now:)

This morning I planned the Skjerjehamn seminar. There will be 1o participants and they have a many different and interesting subject they want to present. I'm also looking forward to show them all the nature at Skjerjehamn and do hope people will enjoy this stay. You can take a look at the website http://www.skjerjehamn.no/

I looked into Mortens blog in it's learning to day. Found some interesting reflections on difficulties by using the blog, or technical limitations. Probably that's why he recommended me to start to use the Google blogger. I have to be more familiar with this tool and make more experiments.

I contacted my contact in Germany that has used the conference room VITERO to day. Finally the company made contact with me as well and we will set up appointments where we can use this tool and see how it works. This will be part of the course when people come to Bergen in May.

Well, this has to be all for to day. I want to look at some crim films on TV.
